My mother is descended from "Nestorians" and she has corroborated everything written in the book, right down to the preservation of the Lake salt, the presence of the Cities of Refuge and the celebration of the Passover/Easter as a marriage of Hebraic and Christian practices. It has made me curious for the first time to know more about the history of these forgotten people, as much to wonder about their origins as to ponder how on earth they managed to come through such persecutions as few in the world have ever been unfortunate enough to endure, and to thrive. I will be hoping to read many a similar book in the future.

Thank you for your blog.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7931966923738733513.post-18729223325463210942009-07-07T01:11:05.961-07:002009-07-07T01:11:05.961-07:00So using the term "Nestorian" is equival...So using the term "Nestorian" is equivalent to calling someone a "nigger" or a "kike"? I didn't know this, and I'm sure Mr. Agresto didn't know it either. You'll have to forgive us.

Obviously the term "Nestorian" is outdated, especially in the ethno-political sense. But it would take a very sensitive person indeed to find an insult in his remarks, especially when a man like John Joseph, a life-long member of the Church of the East, could write a book originally called "The Nestorians and Their Muslim Neighbors."* Nevertheless, please forgive the solecism.

Mr. Agresto, I believe, was saying that there has been a large exodus of the Christian population from Kurdistan. That is obviously correct. End of discussion.

[*now of course in a new edition called "The Modern Assyrians of the Middle East"]Gordon Taylorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03653661471478630086noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7931966923738733513.post-45666884152593781762009-07-05T17:42:22.431-07:002009-07-05T17:42:22.431-07:00It would take someone with a thoroughly Kurdish vi...It would take someone with a thoroughly Kurdish view of history and the world to say that the Assyrians (or as the author insists on using it, the pejorative term "Nestorians") are gone. Would this man use the term "nigger" or "kike?" No of course not. Yet he insists on propagating a term that since 1994 even the Vatican has agreed is no longer valid.

So for someone so narrowly informed to say that the Assyrians do not exist shows how little he has read of the evidence at hand. Let's hope Princeton teaches him a few things.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
